How Does Physical Health Affect Mental Health?

Believe it or not, physical health can have a large influence on a person's mental health. In fact, it is found that people who are more active and more physically fit tend to be happier people overall. While this may not be true for everyone, good physical health can certainly increase the chances of better mental health. Does this mean that better physical health can cure depression? Not necessarily. There are many different types of depression and different people suffer depression for different reasons. Some depression is genetic, some is caused by a traumatic event and for others there does not to be any specific cause for the individual to be suffering from depression. Good physical health is just another way for someone to lesson the chances of falling into a depression. For some, more exercise can actually help them with their depression because it gets them more active and allows less time for dwelling on things that bother the person. In fact, some have deemed exercise as a natural antidepressant.

Viewing exercise as a natural antidepressant, one has to wonder how this would affect the mind. Apparently, studies have shown that exercising increases activity in the hippocampus and the frontal lobes, releases endorphins in the body, as well as possibly increases the production of certain types of neurotransmitters that improve a person's mood. Studies and research is still being done to further the understanding of how exercising and improving an individual's physical health can positively influence the state of their mental health. Besides looking at exercise as a natural antidepressant and looking at other reasons why being more fit can actually improve a person's outlook on their selves, one has to think about the many other benefits of exercising that can make a person happier overall. Exercise is a great way to reduce stress after a long day and difficult day. It also helps get the body into better physical condition that can make a person look and feel more attractive. It will also help to reduce chances of developing diseases, such as any number of heart problems, cancers or diabetes, which can have a negative impact on an individual's mental health.

The more one thinks about it, the more they realize that the physical state of their body can have an incredibly large impact on their mental state. A person who is not in good physical condition have a tendency to feel more self-conscious of their selves or even have less confidence in their selves. This example clearly shows how a person's physical health can impact either positively or negatively on a person's mental health. While exercise is a great way to try and improve mood, confidence and avoid depression, anyone experiencing depression should still contact a therapist. Online therapy is available for anyone who needs to talk to someone who can help them work through their depression. Exercise is a decent treatment for some, but an online therapist can also greatly increase the chances of an individual getting rid of their depression. Many people with depression who have seriously wanted to improve their lives and get out of their depression have consulted an online therapist. Online counseling is so effective that most people who consult an online counselor or therapist are successfully.

Health Connections - How To Improve Your Physical Health

If there were a way to improve your physical health right now - today - you'd probably want to know how, wouldn't you?

Good news! You can!

When you literally take the first step, you are moving toward the energy, appearance, and healthy body you desire. A lot of people say, "I can't even run a mile." That may be true on your first day. But it doesn't matter. Run. Walk. Run-walk. Ride your bike. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. On day one, just go out and do something - anything. Then, you'll be amazed at how you also begin to elevate your emotional state, strengthen your relationships, and enrich your spiritual connections.

You will notice that you:

  • Enjoy a greater abundance of energy
  • Look forward to exercising more regularly
  • Want to take care of your health (i.e., dental and physical exams)
  • Appreciate that your health is not a burden on anyone
  • Inspire other with your improved body and physical appearance

5 Suggestions for Taking Action:

  1. Choose a form of exercise (walk, run, bike, etc.) for 10 minutes 3-5 times per week. Gradually add minutes every week.
  2. Schedule a physical or dental appointment. If you schedule it and write it on your calendar, you'll be more likely to go.
  3. Join a gym. If you are uncomfortable going to a gym, get a DVD to follow at home.
  4. Hire a personal trainer. Again, if you are uncomfortable going to a gym, there are many personal trainers who will come to your house.
  5. Keep a Success Log of each step you take towards improving your physical health.

Stay Healthy By Focusing On Indicators Of Good Health

There are a lot of chronic conditions that you can live with and still get by. However, untreated, these conditions can cause a lot of problems down the road. For example, gluten problems can lead to cancer, miscarriage, etc. Under- or over-methylation can lead to problems. Toxicity can lead to cancer. Hypothyroidism has some long-term effects. Chronic vitamin deficiencies can cause a host of problems. Basically anything that's off can cause problems if it's off for a long time as you age.

On the gluten-free forum that I read sometimes, I see so many people who realize later in life that they were gluten intolerant or celiac (which caused many of their problems) or that they had some easily treatable condition, the damage of which has built up over the years.

That's why I think it's important to make sure that you're healthy for the long run, as soon as possible. You want to make sure that if you keep living the way you're living, you'll stay healthy for a long time.

But what can you use as an indicator? How can you tell whether you've caught any of those innumerable hard-to-diagnose but harmful-in-the-long-run conditions? How can you tell that you're healthy enough that you won't have repercussions later in life for something you could have easily corrected?

You can't test it by whether you get cancer or something, because you wouldn't be able to notice that until it actually happened.

Instead, I think there *are* indicators you can use to check that your body is healthy and that you're living a good lifestyle for your body, one that you can take with you into a disease-free future (i.e. if you keep doing what you're doing, you'll have a low chance of preventable disease as you age).

Some potential health indicators are:

-You have enough energy to exercise a regular amount, being able to exercise without too much fatigue.

-You look healthy.

-Your face looks healthy: no circles under eyes, clear skin.

-No crease in ear lobes, which can indicate artery disease and increased risk of heart attack.

-Your facial features look normal. eyebrows are thick for their full duration, don't thin out around 3/4 of the way there.

-I bet Chinese facial reading would have a lot to offer, and indeed Chinese diagnostics in general. I love how Chinese medicine does diagnostics from the body (how it looks, excretions, pulse, colors, temperature, etc.) rather than relying on expensive, time-costing, and largely insensitive lab tests!

-Gums don't bleed.

-Resilient to stress, can deal with problems.

-Emotional control, can be who you want to be (not only does your emotional life effect your health; but emotional processing issues can indicate health problems such as vitamin imbalances, heavy metal toxicity, food sensitivities, and a lot of other things).

-No depression, even without antidepressants or even herbal mood remedies. There are a lot of health issues that can cause depression. For me, my mood is like the canary in the coal mine - it goes anytime things are off with my body. I knew something was wrong a few weeks before I noticed my Lyme disease EM rash. That's why I prefer not to use antidepressants - it is good to have mood as a warning sign if things are wrong in the body.

-Sleeping a normal amount, having a good circadian rhythm.

-Large, well-formed bowel movements. This is a huge one. Mark Konlee goes into a lot of detail about what are healthy bowel movements.

Here's what Konlee counts as indicators of poor health: 1. Lack of Good Appetite, 2. Lack of Good Digestion, 3. Toxic colon - "unhealthy" stools and urine, 4. Low body temperature (below 98.6° F), 5. Lack of deep restful sleep.

So I guess the corollary is that the following are indicators of good health: 1. Good Appetite, 2. Good Digestion, 3. Healthy Stools and Urine, 4. Normal Body Temperature (about 98.6F), 5. Deep, Restful Sleep.

Ideally, I think medicine should be about promoting what keeps us healthy (detoxification, proper nourishment, circulation, etc.) rather than waiting for problems to occur and trying to fix them, when the problems are much more easily prevented than treated.

Focusing on indicators of good health can be even more motivating than merely following a list of things you're supposed to do for "prevention," (such as taking certain amounts of certain vitamins or exercising a certain amount). Looking at health indicators gives you something positive to aim for, rather than just trying to avoid illness.

Moreover, you actually can notice changes in your health indicators (for example, your skin might get softer when you get enough essential fatty acids), whereas it might be hard to stick with a prevention program (eat this vitamin and decrease your risk of heart disease) if you don't notice changes in your body and if the reward is far removed.

Focusing on positive health indicators gives a faster reward, since many of these indicators can be improved on a scale of days to months.

Health Insurance Over 50 And Under 65

If you are between the ages of 50 and 65 and you are going to be looking for health insurance or are looking for health insurance you need some help. This is a tough age (of course what age isn't starting with the terrible twos) because you are at a prime age to start developing health problems. Statistically speaking and statistics is the only language insurance companies speak, the insurance company can predict they are going to spend more on 50-65 year old than a 20-45 year old. For that reason premiums are much higher for the older person.

But, we Baby Boomers are a smart group and where there is a will, there is a way. So let's look at some of the options:

If you currently have a job and are looking to retire or start your own business, you have a couple of avenues you can investigate. First you can inquire if your company will let you buy health insurance through the company plan. If your company will let you do this your employer (assuming we are talking early retirement) may subsidize part of your premiums. If not, you still get group rates which are a whole lot cheaper than individual rates. If you are married and your spouse is still working strongly consider adding yourself to his/her plan if that option is available to you.

The next option (if you currently have a job which provides health insurance) is COBRA or Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. COBRA lets former employees and their dependents continue their employer's group coverage for up to 18 months. The best thing about COBRA is it is guaranteed. Your former employer's insurer can't turn you down even if you have a chronic medical condition. The worst thing about COBRA is the cost. Your employer generally covers 70% or more of your health insurance premium. With COBRA you have to pay the whole premium plus administrative costs. Industry surveys indicate based on an average premium (for 2007), a former employee would have to pay more than $373 a month for individual coverage and more than $1,008 a month for family coverage.

If you are not currently employed by a company who provides health insurance there are still choices for you. If you have pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure you can receive coverage through a state high-risk health program designed to help those with medical conditions that prevent them from getting insurance. Again though like COBRA the premiums can be quite high.

You can also check out professional organizations you could join or are already affiliated with to see if they offer health insurance policies for members. Because these are group plans, the premiums may be less than what you would pay in the individual market.

Finally, there is the individual health insurance option. There has been some progress in terms of offerings of policies for the 50-65 year age group market mainly because insurers see this age group as a potential growth market. Many Baby Boomers are in good health and have higher income than younger people. Also insurance companies hope that retirees will still purchase their products, such as supplemental insurance, even after they're eligible for Medicare. Some of policies currently offered may have premiums as low as $200 per month for people who are in good health and willing to pay a high deductible. Many insurance advice columnists recommend combining a high deductible individual health insurance policy with a health savings account. HSA contributions are made with pretax dollars, and any money left over in the account at the end of the year is rolled over for future use. Withdrawals are not taxed if used for qualified medical expenses.

Health Insurance Marketing

Of all types of insurance, health insurance is the most controversial because of the conflict between the insurance company's need to remain afloat and the customer's need to have insurance. Insurance companies' commissions on health plans are very low, thus some companies struggle to make a profit. It used to be that the premiums paid by younger, healthy clients were low compared to those paid by elderly clients. The reason for this was so that the insurance company could sustain the output in claims of the elderly clients. However, these days, the premiums are the same for a completely healthy young adult as they are for an elderly man who just had by-pass surgery.

Since we are already dealing with this kind of scenario, what we can do now is change the public's perception of it. Connect yourself with companies whose employees need a health plan. Go to crowded areas and advertise. Give out flyers and hang banners. Offer free medical check ups upon signing up. Give the public a chance to like you and the insurance company you are representing. If you've done this already, sustain the relationship.

Listen to what people have to say. Once common complaint is that insurance companies do not announce that they have increased the rates of their insurance premiums. This defeats the purpose of giving that extra service to the customers. Inform them in advance and let them know why there is a need for an increase.

Do not charge people different rates. This gives them the feeling that they are being fairly untreated and that the insurance companies are just after the profit and not the welfare of its customers.

When a claim is made, particularly for a very sizeable amount, help out in processing the paperwork. Do not let bureaucracy eat up the service so that the one making the claim will just eventually give up. This used to be a common practice in the insurance business and should never be repeated.

And lastly, try to help out those self-employed individuals who are applying for health insurance. Complaints about not being able to accommodate the self-employed are common because health insurance companies are too busy accommodating those employer-sponsored clients. Remember, those self-employed individuals may eventually strike it big. Or maybe they are already big and are just fishing for an efficient health insurance company.

Health Insurance Lifetime Maximum

The Health Insurance Lifetime Maximum of your plan is the total amount of money the insurance company will pay for the entire time you have coverage under that plan. Once you reach that amount, your plan will not pay for any more of your medical expenses.

What Are The Limits?

The maximum amount that the insurance company will pay varies from policy to policy, with the typical amount being between 1 million and 5 million dollars. There are some polices though, that only contribute a total of less than 1 million dollars over the lifetime of the policy.

On a brighter note, although not as common, there are policies that have an unlimited lifetime maximum.

Why Are There Limits?

Insurance companies set these limits to keep their total possible liability for a health insurance plan as low as possible.

Keeping these limits lower also keeps the premium rates lower. All of the guidelines of the plan, including the lifetime cap come into play when insurance companies set the cost of the insurance plan. A plan richer in benefits is going to cost more.

For instance, a health insurance plan with a high deductible and a low lifetime cap will cost less than a plan with a low deductible and unlimited lifetime benefits.

Similarly, when the annual deductibles of two plans are the same, the plan with a higher lifetime maximum will cost you more.

Should You Be Concerned?

You and your family members may be in perfect health and can never foresee that any one of you could possibly incur medical bills as high as one to five million dollars. And quite frankly, I hope you never do!

But, with the rising costs of medical treatment for conditions such as open heart surgery, cancer, organ transplants and chronic illnesses, it isn't that difficult to reach those amounts in a short amount of time.

If you want to be sure to be covered for all medical expenses for the duration of your coverage under that policy, look for one with a higher lifetime limit or one with no limit. To lessen the cost of these plans, consider accepting a higher annual deductible.

P.S. Consider this ~ A coverage cap of $1 million in the 1970s would have had to grow to more than $10 million today to keep pace with inflations and costs.

Health Care Information Exchange

Health information exchange describes the process of mobilizing health information through electronic means across various concerned organizations within a given hospital system, community or region. This process involves moving clinical information through different health care information systems while ensuring that the integrity and meaning of the information is maintained exactly as it was in its original state. The smooth and seamless exchange of clinical data and information is critical for delivering high quality health care information.

Why it's Important and How the Government is Promoting It

Health information exchange describes the process of mobilizing health information through electronic means across various concerned organizations within a given hospital system, community or region. This process involves moving clinical information through different information systems while ensuring that the integrity and meaning of the information is maintained exactly as it was in its original state. The smooth and seamless exchange of clinical data and information is critical for delivering high quality care. Thus it also plays a major role in determining the effectiveness of organizations.

Although the advantages of efficient sharing of health care information among concerned parties, including patients and physicians and other authorized members are understood and desired by most people who are involved in health care system, very few organizations have actually gone ahead and taken full advantage of the technological progress made in the area of health informatics and computer science. Health care information exchange involves various technology based systems like interoperability, business information systems, standards utilization, and harmonization. All of these need to be established on local, state and national level to provide a seamless network of information.

According to David Blumenthal, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, if a standardized system of electronic health records can be put into widespread use it can lead to highly improved levels of efficiency and patient safety, and significantly better quality.

An efficient information system has got several benefits to offer to all parties involved in the field of health care whether they are service providers or consumers. It allows health care professionals to conveniently access and retrieves relevant and complete medical data which helps them in providing patient-centered care that is more efficient, effective and timely. A well established health related information exchange system would also provide public health officials with a ready and in-depth database of public information which they can reliably use in analyzing health of the population effectively.

Importance Of Good Health Care

Health care is one of the most important components in your life. Disease or illness can really mean a down turn in your life. The biggest asset we can have in life therefore is health. Health care is normally defined as the management or treatment of any health problem through the services that might be offered by medical, nursing, dental or any other related service. When you talk about the care of health, you are talking of all goods and services that are produced to improve on your health. They may be curative, preventative or even palliative solutions. A system of health care is one that is organized to give health services to a population or a group of people.

Health care can be for an individual or for a large group of people depending on how the systems are organized. Importance of health care cannot be overemphasized. In society, people are worried about the kinds of systems there are, to deal with issues of health. In developed countries, their systems are designed to cater for all people; whether poor or rich. However, the systems are lacking in regard to flaws. In developing countries, people usually take care of health as an individual thing and, if you do not have enough money, you might not get access to quality care. There are so many disparities and, some systems in certain countries are becoming worse; not able to deal with demand of health. Health is not a cheap affair, you have to have a good system if you want it to work for you. Governments have the responsibility to create or formulate policies that will favor people in this regard. Good systems of health can be erected by the top most leadership of a state.

The importance of good health care can be seen in the hopes of a people who are yearning for health. To become rich or to produce something in life, you have to have that ability or strength. If you are sick, you are likely not to develop yourself in any way. Therefore health is wealth and this is the biggest lesson that we can learn today. When you are in good health, you will be a happy person and enthusiastic about the business of life. Sickly people will dread every moment of their pain and, they are not able to have joy and peace. When it comes to preventative health care like the use of vaccinations, we are going ahead of time and making sure that you are safe from future illnesses. When it comes to prevention of pregnancy as part of care for health, we are able to structure our lives an take control. However, measures such as abortions are pretty controversial.

However, those countries that have legalized abortion need to ensure that people who choose to undergo it are safe and protected. Good health care will give rise to a generation that is ready to take on the world. Diseases have a way of making the future look very deem. For example, the spread of the AIDS virus has really dealt a huge blow on this generation. Proper care is beginning to be felt in many corners of the world especially areas where it is rampant like sub Saharan Africa. Therefore, make sure that no matter whether you are and individual or a group, you prioritize on health. Investing in good care for health is investing in life.
