Health Care Services

There are many health services and a proper range of health care services needs to be provided under a proper healthcare system. The United States does not have the best health care services in the world but it can be said that it has the best emergency care system around the globe. The fact behind this is that America is having highest level of poverty and income inequality among all the rich and developed nations and it affects the reach of the people to the proper health services.

Health systems are designed to fulfill the needs of the health care of some targeted nation or population. Health care planning and its proper system implementation are much more necessary for any country or government. According to the World health report 2000 "Improving performance are good health, responsiveness to the expectations of the population, and fair financial contribution." Duckett (2004) proposed a two dimensional approach to evaluation of health systems: "quality, efficiency and acceptability on one dimension and equity on another."

To have a best health care facilities UNICEF advises that there must be three primary steps which can then systematically improve the health services and to complete a health system.

1. Standards
2. Assessment and Accreditation
3. Support Materials

Seven years ago World Health Organization made the first major effort to rank the health systems of 191 nations. The following parameters were taken in consideration for the best care services;

· Insurance Coverage
· Access
· Fairness
· Health Lives
· Quality
· Life and Death
· Patient Satisfaction
· Use of IT
· Top of the Line Care
· Walk in clinic

Health is a state of well being, physically, mentally, socially and psychologically. Health services are fundamental part of any community, therefore financial stability and proper coverage of medical through insurance or some other way is very much necessary for a human to live and stay normal. There is a proper process oriented structure is required, implemented by the government to provide the health services to each and every of their citizen. The health care industry is responsible to provide the proper health care services to the people with their arm namely health services providers. These health services are paid and could be paid by the patient, by insurance plan, or by the government. Charities and volunteers also play their role to provide the health services to those who are unable to afford. There could be various ways to provide health services to the patient, normally can be categorized into two main;

· Face to Face:

This is the most common way, where the provider, interacts with the patient physically and after having the checkup and understanding of the issues, diagnoses the problem or suggests some tests or medication.

· Non -Face To Face:

Telecommunication is the latest emerging facility, which is now in use to provide healthcare services as well. The practitioner can interact with the patient using, phone, email, text message, or video conferencing and then can provide further suggestions to him / her.

Health services are also provided at schools where the children could be taken care of. UNESCO has published a set of tools to provide the guidance to school healthcare services providers. Following are the basic parameters which must be catered;

· HIV/AIDS
· Food and nutrition
· Helminthes and hygiene
· Malaria
· Violence
· Drugs, tobacco and alcohol

In any health services providing system there could be the following three types of health services.

1. Primary Health Care Services:

Whenever someone needs a health care service in normal and routine life, who could be a family doctor, nurse, nurse practitioner, physiotherapist, pharmacist, etc. Primary health services often include prevention and treatment of common diseases and injuries.

2. Secondary Health CareServices:

Whenever someone needs a special care he/she is referred to a specialized care unit, like hospital, or nursing home to provide secondary level of health facilities.

3. Additional / Supplementary Health Care Services:

The services which are normally provided to the senior citizens, children or to whom which do not have their proper medical coverage or paying capabilities and the expanses are covered through government funds or through some volunteer or charity organization.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Folic Acid?

Here you can learn about the health benefits of folic acid, folate or vitamin B9. How to take and how much are important, please read carefully.

The terms are all used to describe this water-soluble vitamin.

Folic Acid - A Must Have

It is one of the essential vitamins, meaning that the body must have it to function, but cannot produce it. If it is not present in the foods that we eat, serious health problems will ensue.

Folate & Pregnancy

Pregnant women and those that could become pregnant are advised to take a supplement, because low intake during the very early stages of pregnancy could cause birth defects like spina bifida. The defects are known as neural tube defects and are still the most common ones, even in industrialized societies. In neural tube defects, there is an abnormal opening in the brain or spinal cord. The result can be paralysis, brain damage or stillbirth.

Vitamin B9 & Red Blood Cells

Children and adults require the nutrient to produce red blood cells. Low intake of the nutrient on a continuous basis may not result in an obvious deficiency, but could lead to the development of cancer, because the nutrient is necessary for the production and maintenance of all of the cells of the body.

Folate Deficiency & Heart Disease

The health benefits of folic acid supplementation may be numerous. Folate deficiency increases a person's risk of heart disease and stroke. The incidence of ischemic heart disease and stroke in the US has reduced by 15%, since food manufacturers were required to fortify breads and cereals with the nutrient.

Sources of Folic Acid

The best source of the nutrient is actually dark leafy greens. Beans and peas are also a good source. Other fruits and vegetables provide a significant amount. So, it is not that the nutrient occurs in few foods. It is that people's dietary preferences have them eating more breads and cereals. Thus fortification was believed to be important and seems to be effective.

Depression, Obesity, Type II Diabetes

Other health benefits of folic acid supplementation have to do with depression and obesity. There are several studies indicating that the supplements are beneficial in treating depression and may have a role in the prevention of obesity and type II diabetes.

Folic Acid - How to Take & How Much

Another study concerned memory and mental agility in older people. Verbal fluency and short term memory was found to be better in people taking a supplement. But, simply meeting your minimum daily requirements for the nutrient will not provide that benefit. Twice the current RDA was given to the participants in the study.

Although there may be many health benefits of folic acid supplementation, it is important to take other B vitamins and nutrients along with it. A single-ingredient supplement could interfere with the absorption of B12 and other nutrients.

Multi-Supplement Approach

It always makes more sense to take a well-designed multi-nutritional formula, even if you feel that you are eating a balanced diet and getting most of the essential nutrients through the foods that you eat. For one thing, the minimum recommended daily allowances may provide only minimally good health, as exemplified by the study concerning memory in the elderly.

What you have read about here are just a few of the health benefits of folic acid. There are others that you might be interested in.

Health Care Vs. The Lower Middle Class

For many Americans, health insurance is a medical necessity and without it, many Americans would be left with medical bills that are too expensive to pay. Most people would agree that without some form of health insurance, purchasing prescription drugs would not be possible. Many Americans, such as those with diabetes cannot survive without certain prescription medications.

The upper middle and upper class citizens are generally able to afford health care, often times without needing health insurance and lower class Americans are able to obtain health care through organizations such as Medicaid, which usually pay for over-all incurred medical expenses.

So who did we leave out of this mix of American society? The lower middle class Americans who “fall between the cracks” of obtaining the quality health care they need.

Why can’t many lower middle class Americans afford quality health care? To provide an adequate answer to this question, we first need to define the American class system in terms of socioeconomics and its relationship to health insurance and the general health care system.

The working class or middle class is defined as a group of people who make up about 33% (the majority) of the population and bring home an average yearly income of $30K to $50K per year. The upper middle class also averages $55K to about $155K annually.
Compare those figures to the upper class, which make up only 2% of the population and contribute $155K to billions per year. (Source: [http://www.alamedasoc-tripod.com/handouts/soc2/Slides_Pt_2_Soc2.doc]). One can clearly see that there is a large economic gap between the classes and that income in part plays a significant role as to why many lower middle class Americans cannot afford quality health insurance or health care.

Another contributing factor as to why many working class Americans cannot afford health care is due to the continued rising costs of over-all health care. Total health care costs, including insurance premiums have gone up drastically since 2001 and many employers are “sticking” the additional associated health insurance costs to their employees.

While many working class Americans are presented with health insurance opportunities, (usually through employment) many cannot afford the high monthly and sometimes yearly premiums associated with a health insurance plan. Other working class citizens are able to afford the insurance premiums, but are unable to take advantage of a health care plan because such a large percentage of their monthly or yearly income is set aside to pay for health insurance. This leaves many Americans left with the dilemma of making a choice between basic necessities such as paying for a monthly mortgage note, groceries or health insurance.

In essence, American society has created and contributed to a highly flawed health care system that caters to the rich, cares for the poor, yet excludes the largest percentage of its population. As a society, we need to develop new ways of coping with the changes and rising costs in our health care system and develop a method that allows the lower middle class to receive the quality health care they deserve without going penniless.

This may require a change in the American healthcare system itself or quite possibly, a change within government medical aid. Either way, one thing is certain: Without the basic necessities of life, including quality healthcare, the working class over time is sure to crumble.

How Does Stress Affect Health?

Stress can affect our health in many ways. Stress itself is perfectly natural and, providing it is kept in control, stress doesn't always adversely affect our health. We'll look below at some of the less healthy effects on your health that stress can give.

So, how does stress affect your health?

  • Depression. Stress can be a big factor in depression. Whilst depression can be reduced with modern drugs, it's much better to get to the root cause of the stress that is leading to it.
  • Excessive stress can lead to ulcers developing. These can be amongst the first signs that we are too stressed.
  • Hair loss can be a sign of too much stress. People can quite literally "pull their hair out" if they are subjected to excessive stress.
  • When our body is stressed, our immune system is stretched. Diseases such as diabetes can manifest when our body is subject to too much stress.
  • When we are stressed, we can display anxiety disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder. Sometimes those closest to us will notice these problems before we do. Reducing your stress levels will oftentimes help reduce these disorders.
  • Too much anger can be a sign of stress. Road rage is an example of a temporary effect of stress on our health. If you have become a more "angry" person, this could well be a sign that you are under too much stress. Anger management courses can help but it is best to remove the underlying cause of your anger if at all possible. With the help of friends or a professional anger management counselor, you should be able to discover this root cause.
  • Obesity can be caused by stress. Comfort eating is often used to help reduce stress. That tasty looking chocolate cake can quite likely reduce your stress in the short term but could lead to obesity if you resort to comfort eating to reduce your stress too often.
  • Too much stress over too long a period can even lead to heart disease or a heart attack. Whilst this is an extreme example of how stress affects your health, you should make certain that you address your stress levels to minimize the likelihood of your heart having to tell you that you are too stressed.

These are just a few examples of how stress affects your life. You can probably identify more factors in your day-to-day life that are leading to stress. Start taking steps to lower your stress now, whilst your health is still good.

Understanding The Health Insurance Claims Process

It is very important to make sure that you have adequate health insurance but you also need to make sure that you know how to make a claim when the need arises. The health insurance claims process is fairly straightforward but you need to make sure that you have all of the information that the company will need so that your claim is processed as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Many people assume that the hospital and insurance company will do it all for you. Unfortunately, if you do this and do not make sure that it is being processed correctly then it might be that they will process you claim in a way that suits them and that you will not get all of the benefits that you are rightly entitled to.

A lot of health insurance policies will have coverage for a lot of conditions that are pre-approved, so it is important to read your policy carefully to see if the condition that you need to make a claim for is actually pre-approved as this will save you a lot of needless work. If you are not sure, then it is a good idea to call the insurance company providing your coverage and ask them as they would rather spend a few minutes helping you on the phone than having to work through a lot of pointless paperwork that you have given then for a condition that is actually pre-approved for treatment.

You also need to make sure you have read the schedule that tells you what benefits are attached to your insurance so that you know what you are entitled to. Additionally, you also need to read the exclusions and the limits for your insurance. There will be a separate part that tells you how to submit your request as each company has it's own way of processing claims. If your insurance is an indemnity plan then the company will only process the claim after you have had the treatment, but you should always get an explanation of benefits whenever any part of a claim is processed no matter what insurance plan you have, this way you will know exactly what they have allowed or disallowed and why.

When you make an insurance claim it is important to make sure that you are fully aware of what that hospital and insurance company are doing so that you can make sure that they are giving you everything that you are entitled to that way if there is anything that needs sorting out you can give them the information to do it as soon as possible.
