Health Prevention


Health prevention consists of three levels: primary, secondary and tertiary. Primary is considered health promotion or prevention. In this level, the focus is on educating the individual about precautions that should be taken to improve health conditions. Secondary is the diagnosis and treatment phase. Once an illness is detected, your healthcare provider will select the proper way of treating it. Tertiary is the rehabilitation phase. This is when you are recovering from your illness. A person's health is still compromised in this phase, so one still needs to be careful.

The most important level is the first, primary. It is the key to maintaining a healthy, functioning body. Health prevention is stressed in many places. Healthcare professionals visit schools to let the students know the risks of certain lifestyles. There are pieces of literature found at other locations that discuss mental, physical and sexual health. These brochures can be found not only at high schools but clinics, hospitals and crisis centers.

Scientists have created a set of disease prevention and health promotion objectives known as Healthy People 2010. It discusses a variety of topics concerning public health. They have found that there are 10 health issues that seriously affects America. These issues are known as the Leading Health Indicators. They are as follows:

1. Physical Activity

2. Overweight and Obesity

3. Tobacco Use

4. Substance Abuse

5. Responsible Sexual Behavior

6. Mental Health

7. Injury and Violence

8. Environmental Quality

9. Immunization

10. Access to Health Care

People can live longer, healthier lives by understanding the importance of these issues. Access to such information is very important when it comes to personal health. It is best when one can avoid any unnecessary health complications. By taking the proper precautions one can increase the quality and years of a healthy life.

Current Health Care Issues


There are several health care issues that are in the news and in the minds of many people these days. Perhaps because of the push for universal health care, misuses of the current health care system have come to light. The health care issues that plague Americans need to be addressed with intelligent debate and understanding.

One of the health care issues is the overuse of emergency rooms by the poor. It is not their faults. They are simply responding to a situation in which they have no other recourse. For example, a low-income family may have a child with a cut finger. If they had insurance, the parents would take the child to a doctor's office or an urgent care clinic to get the finger stitched up.

Since they have no such option, they take the much more costly route of going to the emergency room for the same service. This puts a strain on emergency rooms and costs taxpayers much more than if the poor families were given adequate medical coverage in the first place. Health care issues like this one are difficult to fathom when there are so many sources of cheaper medical care.

Other health care issues involve preventative medicine. Insurance companies do not all support the patient's right to preventative medical screening procedures and treatments. This also makes health care more expensive in the long run.

Many health care issues revolve around the older population. There are so many elderly people who are given little or no help with their prescription medications. Insurance companies make drug coverage available - at a price that is so high that most seniors cannot afford it. This does little to resolve these health care issues.

With all the health care issues that are in the public eye, there needs to be a better system of communication on these subjects. People can have an impact on their health care system if they know where to have their ideas on health care issues heard. It is time for the government and other organizations to give them a voice.

What's More Important - Health, Wealth Or Time?


There are three areas by which we humans are guided. They are health, wealth and time and we're usually not focused on all of them at once. We pick one and base our life around it whether consciously or subconsciously, but which is the most important?

The debate is on about which holds the crown of importance, because we have the privilege of determining that for ourselves. Once the choice is made, you are delivered to your respective box in which you'll shape your life. There you'll find service, opportunity and consequence aptly matching your decision.

Let's look at the first area of "health". When asked, most people will choose this as the most important. When one chooses health, a series of rituals are instituted designed specifically for the benefit of the physical body. Luckily, the benefits of maintaining optimum body balance are also enjoyed by the emotional and intellectual parts as well. They are better served with a well running machine of support behind the scenes.

Systems are running smoothly. The energy flow, both in and out are fine tuned and set for travel. Our connection to the Universe is complete and the process of manifesting may now begin.

Not a bad choice, for without health, you cannot gain wealth, because you're too sick to do what's necessary for its achievement. Besides, a lack of health means the time you spend here is not considered "Grade A". Humanity has established that a happy, prosperous life and poor health are not in harmony and cannot coexist. Who wants a life of illness, struggle and limitation? Of course, by choice, no one.

Those in good health are ideal in helping those who are not. Caring for the sick and less fortunate is easy for one with a strong physical ability. Service and teaching opportunities can bring rewards on yet another scale and it is believed that endurance is more apt to be won during good health.

Games of competition are on the radar, which can bring pleasure to those who watch as well as fame and fortune to those who participate. With good health, one can run marathons through the business world with a cap that reads entrepreneur, inventor or employee.

The adventures of exploring this planet await you in the mountains, in the ocean, up in the sky and on land. Even space is waiting just for you.

When we're physically strong and in good health, we have an open book before us in which we can write new history notes for others to read and share. Granted, it's a good candidate for the crown, but is it really the most important of the three?

Let's talk now about "wealth". This word offers different options to its chooser. For instance, a wealth of knowledge is sought by lifelong learners. Financial wealth is chased around the globe, sometimes to the extreme. Relational wealth is chosen by those who love people. A wealth of power is wielded by good and bad alike, and hunted by many well-armed foot soldiers. Spiritual wealth is gained through study and prayer.

It's another good choice, for without wealth, it may be difficult to find good health care. Our living conditions may be poor, thus making it easy for health to diminish. The consistent lack of fresh and nutritious food will surely suffer the physical body, and as well, the emotional and intellectual parts in turn, will reduce our time.

Daily life will be a struggle, searching for ways to produce income in which to pay for shelter and food. This struggle will wane on our emotions and we'll have little, if any contentment. There are many who yearn for financial wealth, yet few achieve it.

Relational wealth surrounds those who love people. They are the life of the party, the event is always at their house or they're in charge of making the arrangements. They are good friends, always willing to lend a helping hand or a listening ear and can empathize and make you feel special. Their funeral is the best reflection of their relational wealth as people fill to capacity and overflow outside and surround the building, with even more who mourn from afar. They are missed dearly, talked and written about. Some even make it to legend status.

A wealth of power is usually sought by those who wish to feed the ego. Nonetheless, power is available to everyone. It's the amount of power that can alter character and take the grateful to greedy. It is humanity's hope that the powerful exercise wisdom and compassion, though we do not consider this to be the norm.

A wealth of knowledge is available to all, yet only those who are inclined, driven or tickled toward this path will oblige. They are called lifelong learners. They carry their desire and curiosity for knowledge with them during their entire life span and are usually reading more than one book at a time. Their library is a marvel and the thrill of reading a good book is right up there with free money.

Humans have written and recorded their history, thoughts, teachings and fantasies for our pleasure. Libraries are available to most in some countries and to all here in America. We have only to walk in and select a book to be taken to a far off land or story in which we'll learn new facts or life lessons. The mind is truly a terrible thing to waste and those that don't waste it feel enriched. We will never learn all of the knowledge there is in the world, because we learn new things every day. This cup definitely overflows.

Wealth is another great candidate for the crown, but is it really the most important?

Now let's talk about "time". Time is unique in that we all receive it equally. Some are here longer than others, true, but I'm referring to the breakdown of time we have while we're here. The distribution of hours in any given day is equally available to all and its assignment is freely granted to every walk of life, whether human or animal.

The cauldron of time is poured out consistently. At best, we make a guess at how much time was in the cauldron to start, and further, we know not how much remains, yet its effect is dynamic.

We invest time because it is a non-renewable commodity, one in which the youth generally pay no mind, but one in which the elders cherish. We assign blocks of time to ventures of interest throughout our lives and try to steal time by visiting the plastic surgeon.

Time is wasted on one activity when it should have been designated to another for more valued gain. Time can be remembered and forgotten. Time is pushed back, moved up, passed by and can even seem to stand still. We go through time, around the time, in, under and over time. For different people, it can go by as fast as a speeding bullet and drag at the same time.

Time can be navigated by perception. Do we have time to go to the game and clean the house before your mother comes to dinner? With my work and the kids, I just don't have time to write that book. I have plenty of time for college, but first I want to backpack through Europe for a while.

What if we had no time? I think we can safely say that if there is no time, there is no us, according to our present understanding. Time is inherent to our existence. Life and time are bonded from our perspective and we cannot have one without the other.

Can we have life without health? Yes. Sad and shortened perhaps, but yes, we can have life without health.

Can we have life without wealth? Yes. Many of us already do.

But, we can't have life without time. Therefore, time is the most important. When we have time we have life. Along with life comes choice. With time, life and choice we have the foundation of opportunity that makes up our visit to this place. It's like being put in a giant toy box and allowed to play for a while.

Some of us play with health, some with wealth and others with time. The choice is ours. The decisions we make each moment are based on one of these areas and it's what we choose to do with our time that will determine our health as well as our wealth. Time provides the color, but these choices become the brushes that paint the landscape of our life.

Regardless of our canvas, it all comes back to time. Time enables us to seek health to the desired degree and the acquisition of wealth in varying type and measure.

May each of our choices transform into skilled and stylish brush strokes, fed with the color dispensed by time. I think time gets the crown.

Health Risks Associated With Extended Computer Usage


It has long been known that construction workers, mechanics, truck drivers and other blue collar workers were at risk for job related illnesses and injuries. However, white-collar jobs have always been considered safe. This is not so anymore. Now there are health risks associated with jobs where employees work all day at a computer. And the medical profession has even invented names for these.

These health problems affect a wide variety of occupational fields, even education. And a significant number of research studies have been initiated to investigate the problem.

For instance, Masayuki Tatemichi at Toho University School of medicine conducted a study in which 10,000 workers participated. Their age averaged 43 years and they reported vision problems. Five hundred had problems with peripheral vision and 165 had glaucoma. The study concluded that heavy computer users who were farsighted or nearsighted had increased risk for glaucoma.

A study in Bangalore, India surveyed twenty companies employed software engineers to identify common complaints originating from long-term computer usage. The most often reported were vision problems, back pain and other musculo-skeletal pain. Weight gain was psychological strain were also mentioned.

Another study of all primary and secondary schools in Otago and Southland, New Zealand found that 2/3 of the administrators, 30% of the principals and over 50% of the teachers had some kind of health problem related to computer use.

Yet few were taking any preventive measures or participating in professional development to reduce risks.

The same findings marked the other studies. Although people were aware of the problems and their cause, the great majority was not taking any preventive measures.

Yet a Japanese study by Dr. Tetsuya Nakazawa of Chiba University concluded that computer use in excess of five hours per day was responsible for headache, eyestrain, joint pain, stiff shoulders, insomnia and fatigue. These results were consistent over a three-year period.

A case study with more serious consequences has been recorded by Dr. Richard Beasley of the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand. According to Dr. Beasley, people who use computers for long periods of time are at risk for developing ethrombosis. Said Dr. Beasley, "The association between prolonged seated immobility and venous thromboembolism is well recognized in relation to travel. The risk of developing VTE following sitting for prolonged periods at a computer has recently been recognized."

The vision disorder due to excessive computer use has been identified as Computer Vision Syndrome. Symptoms are dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, eyestrain, and shoulder back pain.

To alleviate the problem it is suggested that computer users take regular breaks, blink their eyes frequently, occasionally close their eyes for a few minutes and every fifteen minutes or so look away from the computer to stare at an object in the distance.

For the back pain and other muscular related problems, it is suggested that people get up every hour, stretch and move around for about five minutes. They should also do an activity which moves each foot and leg.

A computer user should be seated at least two feet away from the screen with the screen below eye level. Their chair should be comfortable and they should sit up straight in the chair with feet firmly on the floor. They should not cross their legs.

Since problems vary with individuals each person has to work out a prevention plan appropriate for their needs but it is important that people not continue to ignore the matter.

Companies particularly need to support their staff by allowing the needed breaks, providing healthful work areas, and educating employees regarding the risks and measures that can be taken to overcome them.

What is mental health?

Though no concise definition exists, mental health is basically your attitude and approach to life. Psychological, environmental, genetic, or physiological factors have a profound effect on overall mental development.

Health - How Do You Know What You Mean?


Are you Healthy - or just not Sick? If this sounds like a trivial question, then but how do you answer it? isn't it interesting that we can easily and specifically talk about our Ill-health at length, but we can't talk about Health in a way that evokes unambiguous understanding of what is meant? Does it even matter if there is a definition of the rather amorphous term? Well - we wouldn't dare to go and see a physician in absence of a "symptom" - an exception of your "normal" look or feeling? Of course not, health-care systems do not care about Health, they care about the mendingĂ‚  manifest diversions from the "Normal" condition. In other words, health-care should be more aptly referred to as "sick-care", because the system has no answers for the Healthy. Consequently, the definition of "sick" is rather obvious, it is the visible or experienced reduction of normal physical or mental condition or function. There are many different ways of expression, but the essence is unequivocally the same.

Now try to define "Health" and "being healthy" by a term that evokes a universally equivalent understanding. Obviously a challenge, most dictionaries confine the term as something like "the absence of disease". But isn't there much more to Health than the absence of an identifiable ailment? Apart from evident Physical Health, what about more concealed Mental Health, Emotional Health, Spiritual Health, Social Health, Intellectual Health - isn't all that essential to a state of well being? But does that mean "Health" is the absence of any and all (perceived) problems and concerns - would then "Health" be synonymous with Happiness? Even reduced to Physical Health there is a wide spectrum of ambiguity, if you feel tired or fatigued - are you sick or are you healthy? Is weight gain a disease or just a sign of hedonism? Are you ill because you need reading glasses? What about wrinkles and sagging skin - is aging a disease? This thought open a Pandora's box: what is the normal rate of aging - where is - and who is the authority for setting the benchmark for "normal"?

Are you absolutely or relatively Healthy?

Researchers at Rice University have tried to define the parameters for measuring Health. They conclude that Health is measured in terms of

l) absence of physical pain, physical disability, or a condition that is likely to cause death

2) emotional well-being, and

3) satisfactory social functioning.

But they admit that there is no single standard of measurement of health status of Individuals or Groups, which may be assessed by an observer. It follows that "Health" assessed in this way is relative and subjective, while what we really want to know is:

Am I absolutely Healthy - objectively measured, not subjectively assumed by relative comparison with Others. We don't compare our pain or disfigurement with the neighbors arthritis or cancer. Quite the opposite: we visualize and strive to look as young and slim as the person on the cover of a magazine. Such natural cravings are the very foundation of an ever growing Beauty and Anti-Aging industry, even in absence of objective standards.

That is exactly the point: if we can't define Health but only Ill-health - we'll never look like that Idol no matter what! Because if we measure our Health by its weaning, we'll wait to act until we can define the symptoms, thereby depriving ourselves from gaining and sustaining utmost Vitality and stunning Appearance.

If we succeed in establishing a globally valid definition for absolute Health - we can actually begin to provide of real Health-care, that is caring for the preservation - or revival of the benchmark Health.
