How To Choose A Good Health Insurance Plan

A good health insurance plan is one of the most important things you need to have for yourself and for your family. But what should a good health insurance plan consist of?

It can be a bit of a challenge today to find the right insurance plan for yourself and your family because of the diverse options available. However, when you are choosing a good health insurance plan, don't simply base your decision on the cost of the monthly premium.

Know the details of the health insurance plan - what it covers and what it doesn't cover. Also find out the health insurance plan's in-network as opposed to out-of-network coverage and expenses. What are its co-payment amounts, deductible amount per family member if applicable, and the coverage caps?

Understand what your needs and your family's needs are when you are deciding on what health insurance to get. Should the health insurance plan cover just you or should it cover you and your spouse? Should it cover you and one child or do you need a health insurance plan that will cover your entire family?

The next step is to find out the health needs of everyone whom you want to include in your health insurance plan. This step can be quite complicated. Are you and the others in good health overall? Does anyone have any pre-existing conditions? Would you at any time feel the need to approach certain medical specialists or institutions? Once you answer these questions, you will be ready to start choosing a good health insurance plan.

You will need to gather all possible health insurance options available for you and your needs. If your employer is offering group insurance, your options may be limited. If you are self-employed, you will have to choose from the different private health insurance plans. Whatever your case is, you need to understand the difference between the two basic types of health insurance plans offered today: the Indemnity Plan and the Managed Care Plan.

With an Indemnity Plan, you are free to choose when and where you want to get medical assistance. This type of health insurance plan has a higher out-of-pocket cost, but for many people, the added price is fair when they consider the freedom they are getting.

With a Managed Care Plan, you are required to only use the services of medical professionals and institutions that are part of the plan's "network". In general, you would need pre-approval for medical services beyond basic preventive care. In terms of costs, the costs of Managed Care Plan are lower.

A Managed Care Plan is a good choice if you (or your dependents) don't have major health problems, are not concerned about who provides you medical services, or have to keep tabs on your medical costs.

Of course, this was just a very basic overview of the two types of health insurance plans. You can research these two plans and study them more deeply.

After deciding if you want a Managed Care Plan or Indemnity Plan, the next step you need to take is choosing the right health insurance company to provide you the health coverage you need. There are many health insurance companies today - from the famous corporate giants to the small, single-owned business.

You need to thoroughly research these companies before you make a decision. You can use the Internet to research companies, ask others for recommendations, and read literature so you can understand each insurance company's claims filing procedures. Armed with the necessary information, you'll be able to choose the right health insurance company for you and your family.

What To Do If You Can't Afford Health Insurance

Do You Lack Health Insurance?

If you are an American, and you lack health insurance, you are not alone. In late 2009, it was estimated that almost 46 million people in the US do not have a health plan. Recent high unemployment figures have not made this figure any lower.

Some of these people lost their group health plans when they lost their job. Others are self employed or work for a company that does not offer group health. There are alternative private health plans on the market, but many people just cannot afford them, or they cannot get accepted by one. While politicians haggle over the issues, sick people are having trouble getting treatment.

Are You Sick or Healthy?

If you are very healthy, or if you already have a health issue, you should seek coverage. It will be, of course, a lot easier to find affordable private health insurance if you are healthy. This way you can be prepared in case you do get sick or get hurt in an accident. Even a simple trip to an emergency room for a broken bone can cost thousands of dollars.

If you have already are hurt or ill, it will be tough to get it covered by private plans now. But even people who are already sick should be able to find some help. I hope to present some options for you.

COBRA

Under federal law, some companies must extend their group medical plan to terminated employees. This can be a good option for those who are between jobs. The only issue with it is the cost. Instead of just paying your employee contribution, now you will probably also have to pay the whole premium amount. Many ex-employees are very surprised when they learn how much this is.

Individual Health Insurance

If you lack major medical, and you are fairly healthy, you may find that a private medical plan is pretty affordable. It is actually a misconception that group benefits are always cheaper than individual plans. Because insurers can underwrite each applicant, they may actually be able to offer lower rates for healthier people.

If you have an option to extend your group benefits (i.e. COBRA) or buy private coverage, just make sure the new plan will accept you, and that it will cover services you need. It is tough, for instance, to get individual plans that cover normal maternity. But if you are accepted, which most people in reasonably good health should be, and the plan satisfies your needs, you may be vary happy with carrying your own health plan.

State Risk Pools

Every US state has some sort of health plan for people who have a pre-existing health problem that gets them declined for other coverage. In some states, these plans can be very expensive though. This is a good option if you do have income or savings, but just do not have health insurance.

Paying For Prescriptions

If you cannot afford your prescription medicine, consult the Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPARX). Their website is PPARX.org. This organization offers a point of access to hundreds of private and public assistance programs. Their website says they have helped millions of Americans get help, and they may be able to help you.

Low Cost Health Clinics

You can find some lower cost health clinics. Many offer health services on a sliding scale. The PPARX website we mentioned about also has a handy search feature. You can enter your zip code and see if you can find a nearby locations. I entered my own zip code for a test, and I was surprised to see that there were several of these clinics within a short drive of my house. I had not been aware that there were any before.

Financial Aid For Health Problems

If you have a serious illness, you may be able to get support from a financial assistance program. These are usually non-profits, and sometimes they are called co-pay programs. Again, PPARX has information on many of these organizations.

County Health Systems

Try searching for a county or public health system in your own area. They should provide reduced fee services for patients. You will probably be locked into using their hospitals, doctors, etc., but you should have access to care.

Public Health Insurance Programs

If you have a very low income, and few assets, you may qualify for Medicaid. This is the federal and state program to insure the poor. Moderate income families should look at the Childrens Health Insurance (CHIPS) plan for their state. Income guidelines to cover kids are higher than those for adults, and these plans may also cover pregnant women.

What To Do If You Have No Health Insurance

I would tell anybody to figure out how they can obtain health insurance as quickly as possible. For instance, you should try to apply for a private policy when you are healthy! You are probably not going to find coverage from a private company after you are already sick or hurt. If you do find a plan that accepts you, it will probably be much more expensive That is how insurance works.

It is always better to plan ahead. Of course, this is not always possible.. If you have a current health issue, and no health plan, you should look at some of the alternatives we listed.

Value Of Good Health

Good health is the secret of happy life. Good health can be defined as the state of being vigorous and free from bodily or mental disease. It is the most precious possession of a man. If a man losses his health, he loose the charms of happy living. Ask the man who has lost his health. He will tell you the value of good health. Health is real wealth of man.

'Sound mind in sound body' is an old saying. Healthy mind can be found only in healthy bodies. Sickly men have sickly minds. Their attitude toward life is gloomy. On the other hand, if the man has good health, his outlook to life is also healthy. He can work for long hours without feeling tired. If a student has good health, his memory is good and his mind is sharp.

Good health cannot be had on demand. There are certain things which are essential for good health. Nutritious food comes first. We should take only that food which is nutritious value. Fresh air is also important for good health. People living in the open air usually enjoy good health. Exercise plays a great role in making a man healthy and fit. Balancing one's hour of sleep and rest also contribute to good health.

There are certain things which are bad for health. We should guard ourselves against them. Smoking is injurious to health. Eating too much spoils ones digestive system. If a man is irregular in his habits, he is likely to lose his health. Lack of energy also results ill-health. So, one must stay fit to lead a happy and healthy life.

Health - Environment Pollution

The five elements of nature -water, land, air, atmosphere and fire - constitute the earth. Any change in one of these elements is bound to affect the equilibrium of the other elements. Any change in the environment impacts all living organisms including man. From the dawn of human civilizations man had been interfering with the environment. For his needs of wood, he cuts trees and thus depleted the forest wealth. Human activities are the basic causes for all kinds of pollution in every part of the world. It is like digging one's own grave. The selfish nature of human beings is the root cause of environmental degradation. What he does today in polluting the environment will bring havoc to the future generations.

The single human activity that is most likely to have a great impact on the climate is the burning of "fossil fuels" such as coal, oil and natural gas. As people burn more fossil fuel for energy, they add more CO2 to the atmosphere. If this goes on long enough, the average temperature of the atmosphere will rise. This will lead to global warming.

The cement dust is a common pollutant. The experimental results have shown that this dust causes reduction in the size and number of leaves in plants and their growth. The fuel in airplanes on combustion produces sculpture dioxide as pollutant. The sculpture dioxide forms sulphurous and the sulfuric acids which are poisonous. There are many industries which discharge sulphides, nitrites, sulphates, phosphates, etc., in river water making it unfit for drinking. The organic compounds which are discharged from industries change the pH and amount of dissolved oxygen in water. The fertilizer factories continuously add sodium; potassium etc., to the soil. These will enter the food chain into human beings and are responsible for a number of diseases.

Noise pollution affects human health, comfort and efficiency. It causes contraction of blood vessels and makes the skin pale. Buildings undergo physical damage like cracks as also broken windows, doors, glasses, etc., by sudden and explosive sound. Marine pollution poses serious threat to marine creatures. According to an estimate, in a hospital, about one and a half kilogram of waste is produced per bed per day.

It is said that "man is a civilized animal", but if he cannot continue to love and be affectionate to the beautiful earth on which he lives, he can no more be called as 'civilized'. Rapid urbanization, modernization and increasing concentration of industries have caused havoc in the environment. Every individual has the basic right to protest against the establishment of industries near residential areas.

If one can afford to give up the habit of smoking, that itself would be a great contribution towards environmental protection. Everyone must plant trees as many as possible and contribute to the process of forestation. A tree may be cut down only after planting ten saplings. Use of bicycles may be encouraged. Toilet culture must be taught to young people. Individuals must keep their vehicles fit on the roads to reduce air and noise pollution. Youth associations and welfare associations should be formed. Corruption and malpractices play an indirect but key role in sabotaging the environmental safety.

A safe environment is the key to healthy living. We spend billions on health care. All this money can be saved by a concerted and conscious drive by government and private partnership to have a clean environment.

Health Problems Of The Bengal Cat

Asian countries have the endangered species the Asian leopards, which recently was taken off the list and now strives in the wilderness. The Bengal cat derives from breeding with the Asian leopards and has since entered the domestic cat breeds list. The Bengal cat although not a tiger, loves to play and lounge around on and in the water.

Bengal cats make a playful pet as they act more like a dog then they do a cat. The fact that they love water adds to the beauty of owning a Bengal cat. They use their paws as little hands and they hide their toys in order to protect them from other pets in the household. Like the Asian leopard, the Bengal cat is smart and sneaky. They love to play and have a keen sense of smell.

Bengal Cat Health Problems and Food Poisoning

One health problem for Bengal cats is food poisoning. These cats remain susceptible to food poisoning unlike other domesticated cats. Any foods that contain bacteria or fungus will cause the Bengal cat health problems.

The affects of human food poisoning also affect the Bengal cat with vomiting, diarrhea, weakness along with fever and stomach upset. The Bengal can die immediacy if the food poisoning is severe enough. In case of food poisoning, the cat needs to see the veterinarian immediacy for some form of treatment. The treatment may include IV fluids and/or stomach flushes. The cat needs close monitoring to recover from the food poisoning.

Bengal Cat Health Problems With Chocolate

As with dogs and many animals, Bengal cat will sub come to chocolate as the caffeine and obromine become toxic and can lead to death. Adult Bengal cats usually do not take to chocolate as much as the kittens. Kitten may consume a large amount of chocolate because of the new taste they experience. Because of the lower weight, the kitten may need serious care if they are not stopped before consuming to much chocolate.

If a cat consumes the chocolate, they may experience seizure, vomiting, hyperactive activity and weakness along with heavy breathing. In rare instances, the Bengal cat may sub come to death if the methylxanthines cause an adverse reaction. The when around candy that contains chocolate or any other additives of chocolate; the holidays seem to have more cats as well as dogs going to the vet for chocolate consumption.

If you encounter the cat health problem with chocolate, you need to seek immediate medical attention to ensure the cat will survive with or without treatment. Always know the exact name of the chocolate your Bengal cat consumed to save time for the vet and his staff when caring for a cat that has ingested the chocolates. If you are unsure of the chocolate, take all the chocolates along so the vet can check for all of them to ensure your Bengal kitten or cat grows up healthy and happy.

Home Health Care Insurance

There are various insurance policies that help pay for or totally cover the costs of home health care. Consumers are reminded to be very cautious when shopping, comparing and buying home health care insurance policies because coverage is often limited. Considering the limitations and loopholes that home health care insurance has, they may be more expensive than other insurance policies. Home health care may only be accounted for by comprehensive insurance policies with pay benefits for nursing homes, assisted living communities, and adult day care.

Types of Home Health Care Insurance

The different types of home health care insurance depend on each policy's extent of coverage when paying for home health care services. Private insurance usually only pays for part of the home health care costs which include personal and hospice care. Managed care insurance plans may offer some help with home health care costs if the home health care provider is Medicare-certified, these plans also require hefty premiums.

There are also existing home care policies which actually pays for the excess amounts that your original insurance policy does not cover. These supplemental insurance policies cover additional payments on home medical equipment as well. Long-term care insurance cover most medical and nursing services including licensed home health care costs. They may even include personal care as well as services incurred for the upkeep and maintenance of the policyholder's home. Long term care insurance is paid for in monthly installments based on the individual's age and health conditions. Many times, the benefits may only be reaped after a pre-defined waiting period, or when the insurance company decides the financial assistance is actually necessary.

Originally, long term care insurance policies were intended to pay for a lengthy stay in a nursing home, yet because of the public demand and preference for home health care, a lot of long term care insurance policies now cover in-home services which may vary greatly according to plans. Considerations regarding pre-existing health conditions and prior hospitalizations usually limit the coverage of these insurance policies.

Health Insurance Contracts - Contract Basics

Insurance contracts are binding and legal contracts in which there is a legal agreement made between two or more eligible parties where specific coverage will happen in exchange for the cost of the health insurance premium. The two parties involved in health insurance contracts are the applicant seeking the insurance coverage and the health insurance company that will provide the coverage. Applicants must be of the legal age of consent and be considered mentally competent. The carrier in question must be state authorized to put together insurance contracts and the insurance representative must be licensed as per the state regulations.

While it is not law that the policies be in writing, contracts are always put in writing because of their complexity. So many details need to be discussed and written out in order to ensure the insurance contract meets the satisfaction of both the applicant and the insurance company involved. Each state has regulations and laws that dictate basic insurance contracts and their provisions. This is why such contracts are often of a rather form letter format and any additions must be in the form of riders or exclusions.

Health insurance contracts are always divided into four basic parts:

(1) Title page- the title page or the policy face is the page on which all the pertinent details such as the policyholder's name, the policy's terms and limits, the dates the monthly premium is due as well as the dollar amount of the premium are listed. This facilitates ease in finding the important dates and amounts as well as the highlights of the health insurance policy.

(2) Conditions- this page gives specific details to the expectations and rights of both the insured person and the health insurance company in question.

(3) Insuring clause- this the page that highlights the insurance company's promise to covered losses incurred that are detailed in the policy's coverage in exchange for the policyholder's faithfulness in complying with the policy terms and payment of the monthly premium agreement.

(4) Exclusions- a list of risks and details that the insurance company will not cover, meaning things that are not included in the insurance medical coverage policy.

Valid insurance contracts are legally binding on the part of both parties, the applicant or policyholder and the carrier providing the coverage. Applicants agree to the monthly premium and the terms of the insurance contracts while the insurance companies agree to pay for the costs that are specified under the coverage plan.

Definition Of Health Related Fitness

Health is related to fitness; that is one thing that can be easily overlooked. This is a basic fact, but with what the technology and other people have brought us, a lot of people forget to see this.

The definition of health related fitness is fitness done with balance among the development and improvement of the whole body. The definition can be better understood when elaborated. Health-related physical fitness includes two major parts; Activity and diet.

Activity (Cardio and Strength Training)

For health related fitness, the activity components included are not only for strength, and muscular development and endurance training. The lungs, heart, and circulatory system are also the focal points in health and fitness. The reason for this is to improve stamina, immune system, and maintain good body composition. Health-related fitness reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and other diseases like cancer and arthritis, and may cure respiratory problems like asthma.

There are lots of activities that can be your favored workout plan. You may choose sports, aerobic any other or exercise work outs. The exercises are much better when you include another exercise that will focus on improving your strength, muscle development and endurance. It will make you less prone to injuries.

When strength training and cardiovascular fitness plans are combined, one will also look and feel younger. This will lead to improved self-esteem. Also, the level of stress and depression will decrease.

If you are wondering about the types of activities that will work best for you, visit a professional and consult with him or her. If you have certain health conditions, it is best if you consult with your doctor first. Aside from cardio and body composition, strength and muscular endurance, flexibility is another important thing that you need to consider. Your fitness health training program should be able to let you enhance your flexibility.

Healthy Diet

Eating proper and balanced food is a must. Your plan including any physical activity may render useless if you do not conform your lifestyle altogether. You are trying to become healthier, so eat healthy food. Your training will let you excrete the toxins in your body, but if you replace the flushed toxins with another unhealthy food, you are then wasting your time, because you will either take a very long time before you get a result, or might not be able to get a positive one in the end.

Also, it is best if you consult with your doctor or dietitian first. They can come up with a diets plan that will work best for you. Especially if you have a certain health condition, it is best to ask for recommendations to make sure your diet plan will not cause another health problem.

As suggested above, cardiovascular training plus strength training plus healthy eating is the definition of health related fitness. Movement and diet must complement each other, in short, opt for healthy lifestyles.

Health and fitness is something recommended to everyone. However, there are different categories that separate the needs that must be met for children, adolescent, young adults, and adults. Being healthy doesn't need to stop once one reaches the age of 99!

Peer Mentoring And Mental Health Recovery

A peer mentor is typically seen as someone to look up to in a professional sense; someone who knows the ropes, someone to guide you, someone to protect you from making the mistakes they made, and someone to go to when you are unsure or need advice. Peer mentors exist at the school level with upper classmen mentoring underclassmen, and are a well established institution in numerous professions. Recently, however, the use of peer mentors in the mental healthcare field has found its way into American practices. Interestingly enough, peer mentors for mental health recovery treatment plans differ quite remarkably in reference to their duties between the American model of support and that developed by practitioners in the United Kingdom.

In cutting-edge American mental health facilities, one is beginning to notice the development of peer support groups and peer mentors. These peer mentors are mental healthcare consumers well on their way to successful recovery who have been employed by the facility they are receiving care from to help those at lower functional levels with similar diagnosis.

The benefits implicit therein are that the peer mentor has first-hand knowledge of what the mentee is experiencing. They understand the withdrawal pains. They can empathize with the frustrations of self-forgiveness. And they can guide mentees to more productive paths. Furthermore, peer mentors humanize the face of mental healthcare for each individual consumer; the treatment becomes relatable and believable because it is coming from the mouth of someone with the mentee's very same diagnosis who has picked themselves up, dusted themselves off, and made a success of themselves with the prescribed treatment plan.

In the U.S. context, peer mentors are typically a supplementary service; they are not primary care, they merely act as another factor of treatment. They exist to teach mental healthcare consumers how to function properly in the world again; mentors teach mentees how to get to the bus, how to get a transit card, where to get their groceries, where the bank is, etc. Professional providers still maintain their position as primary care giver and occupy the main psychotherapy role. Mental healthcare consumers argue this is very beneficial for mental health recovery, but would like to see more out of their peer mentors.

In the United Kingdom, however, peer mentors almost take the place of primary care givers in regard to psychoanalytical duties. When an individual with a mental illness experiences a downswing, it is their peer mentor who receives a call, not their doctor. This comes at a loss, however, for in taking on such a high-level role, peer mentors in the United Kingdom tend to ignore lower-level functions such as re-educating their mentees on the necessities, such as how to catch the bus, where to get their transit pass, etc with the expectation that the mentee's support network will take on such duties.

The inconsistency in how the concept of peer mentors and peer support groups is approached is symptomatic of the differences between American and U.K. mental healthcare beliefs. In the United Kingdom, mental illnesses are seen as a communal responsibility; they are not shameful, it is merely the job of an individual's support network to emotionally and physically encourage the individual throughout his/her treatment plan. In the United States, however, a mental illness is seen as an impurity in the family, and is followed far too frequently with alienation from social support groups.

Thus the U.K. peer mentors, as in following with their culture, take the lead in guiding mentee's through troubled water they have already traversed. In America, mentors must take on the lonely role of the mental healthcare consumer's only support group, thus teach them the necessities of life while leaving psychological treatment to the doctor.

Both approaches have their benefits for mental health recovery. Consumers seem to indicate preference towards approaching their peer mentors with day-to-day problems rather than a psychologist or psychiatrist who may sympathize, but not empathize, with their diagnosis, thus profess favoritism towards the U.K. model. Contrarily, however, one cannot change an entire culture, and American consumers enjoy the basic knowledge bestowed upon them by peer support groups; thus express a need for the American style as well.

Peer mentors can prove immensely influential in mental health recovery with regard to providing motivation and hope. Hope is a critical factor in recovery from mental illnesses, as can be read in my article Spirituality and Hope in Mental Health. Peer support, and its role in mental health recovery, is yet to be firmly established in the American context however; thus we must wait with abated breath as the movement grows to see what role peer mentors will take on next.

Mental Health Vs Physical Health

Mental health is as equally important as physical health. While physical health helps keep our bodies strong and fit, mental health helps keep us sane, rational and headstrong.

Being mentally fit allows us to enjoy life and the environment, helps us overcomes life's trials and tribulations and prevents us from getting a breakdown. We can be creative, learn, try new things, and take risks. Having good mental health helps us become better people and gives us the positive attitude we need when faced by doubt and hardships in our personal and professional life.

You may have already taken steps in maintaining good mental health better than you physical fitness, only you might not realize it. The fact that you are still living and breathing with a sane mind proves that you are capable in coping with life's pressures. In maintaining mental fitness, it is good to know how to overcome stress.

The older we grow, the more prone we are to stress and most of use would want to achieve a stress-free life. Stress will come and it is up to us on how to effectively and positively handle it.
Stress is a state when a change occurs in our lives and we have to adapt to it. Changes such as deaths, births, illness, a new job or getting sacked are changes that require adaptation. In this process of adapting, if you are not careful with coping properly, can lead to stress.

Effectively coping with stress is good for our mind, body and soul. Methods to keep stress at bay are like meditation, exercise, yoga and such help reducing the negative effects of stress. If stress in not controlled, it can effect us emotionally and intellectually. Some of the effects of stress include fear, anxiety, and confusion, a decrease in concentration and memory and loss of sense of humor.

Traditional Health Insurance Versus A Health Savings Account

Consumers frequently inquire about the difference between these plans. Most understand the basics of traditional health insurance, but many do not understand the nuances of a Health Savings Account - or HSA.

What is a Health Savings Account?

The easiest way to explain the difference may be to clarify what health savings accounts are not. They are not health insurance plans. Rather, they operate much like savings accounts setup at a bank. And they are always coupled with a high deductible health insurance plan. That is to say, one could purchase high deductible health insurance coverage with or without a health savings account attached to the plan. A Health Savings Account is exactly that - an account established to save money for future health expenses.

The idea behind HSA's is fairly straightforward. Owners deposit funds into their accounts to be used later for qualified health expenses. Funds can be used for a variety of expenses - including (but not limited to) visits to the doctor, prescriptions and/or meeting the deductible.

Advantages of HSA Compatible Plans

Generally, Health Savings Accounts will be less expensive than traditional insurance plans. The reason is simply that plan deductibles are higher. Therefore, the insurance company underwriting the plan will not have to immediately cover small, incidental claims. The owner would use funds from the HSA for many of the incidentals - like doctor visits, prescriptions, etc.

In addition, the attached savings account has significant tax advantages versus traditional health plans. Contributions into an HSA are tax deferred and the interest accumulates tax deferred - much like contributions to an IRA. However, when funds are withdrawn for qualified medical expenses, no taxes are due on those withdrawals. In this way, HSA's provide tax advantages to the consumer twice - once when the money is deposited and again when it is withdrawn.

Who Should Consider a HSA Compatible Plan?

Healthy individuals who infrequently visit the doctor are good candidates. Individuals and families on a tight budget, but in need of affordable coverage could also consider a HSA plan. These consumers can pay smaller, minor health costs out of the HSA, but should they have a significant claim, the health insurance coupled with the plan is available once the deductible has been met.

Many employer sponsored group plans are already switching to HSA's to lower their health care premium bills. The rising cost of health care is forcing many companies and small business groups to change insurance plans in order to save money. A HSA compatible plan can be a fair compromise for the employee and the employer. Some employer groups will make contributions to the HSA to encourage employees to make the change.

Who Should Consider Traditional Insurance?

Consumers who want lower deductibles and more in immediate benefits tend to purchase traditional plans. In the insurance industry, this concept is called "first dollar benefit". These are benefits the consumer receives without having to meet a deductible or co-insurance provisions. Examples of first dollar benefits include annual physicals, visits to a specialist or non-specialist, OBGYN visits and prescription coverage. While newer HSA plans are offering more in first dollar benefits, usually traditional health insurance will provide the most in immediate benefits.

Traditional coverage can be more advantageous for families and/or middle aged or older consumers. These groups may be more likely to have several claims against their policies. They may desire more in immediate benefits. Additionally, they may simply have the resources available to afford more expensive policies.

In summary, there are many health insurance plans available to the individual, family and business group. Choosing the right plan will often times involve balancing cost with benefits. Health Statistics For Senior Citizens

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) is an organization whose goal is to improve the lives of seniors through education, intervention, and resources. The NCOA is also an excellent resource for statistics regarding the health of older Americans. The following information can be also be found on the NCOA's website, ncoa.org.

Disease
A chronic disease is one that is long lasting or reoccurs in the same patient; examples include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. Approximately 80% of seniors have at least one chronic disease, and 50% are dealing with at least two. The National Governors Association states that 75% of the national money spent on health care is used for chronic diseases. Diabetes is becoming a huge problem with seniors, with 23% suffering from the disease and an additional large population at risk of developing diabetes. Lifestyle intervention in the form of nutrition and exercise can be successful at preventing this disease.

A whopping 90% of seniors have developed hypertension or are at risk of developing hypertension. This type of high blood pressure can lead to complications such as heart attack and heart failure.

Physical Safety
Falling is especially hazardous for seniors. They are prone to fracturing bones because of age and deterioration. At least one third of all seniors will experience a fall that is severe enough to require hospitalization.

Mental Health
As many as one in four older Americans suffer from some type of mental health issue. The most common are depression, anxiety, and dementia. Many do not seek treatment because of a lack of resources or the stigma associated with mental illnesses, especially among some of the older generations. For those who live with poor mental health, the negative effects can be severe and include poor physical health, illness, disability, and decreased quality of life.

These and many other issues can be addressed through a quality home care provider. These professionals are trained to recognize the signs of illness, disease, and other problems and have the resources to treat them. Family members can look to the Trusted Hands Network to put them in touch with a home care provider.

Attracting Love, Health, Wealth, And Happiness

Of course, the intensity to which you desire to achieve any of these life elements varies, according to your values, upbringing, and beliefs. But in reality, this variation has more to do with the element that is lacking in your life rather than your values. Obviously, if you are healthy but broke you will intensify the desire to have more abundance and money.

Or, if you have money but lack a life partner or social life, you will focus on attracting a mate or increase your circle of friends. Perhaps you have a great social life but don't feel too well physically or emotionally. No doubt as to what you will be looking for. This said, know that all these elements must be present in your life if you want to have a balanced lifestyle. Only then you will achieve total happiness.

Now, how can you attract what you are lacking, so that you too can be totally happy? This is tricky for, according to the Law of Attraction, what we focus on becomes reality. By that, I mean that, if you lack romance in life, you will probably be focusing on this lack and working desperately to fill it. What happens here is that, spiritually speaking, you enter in a vicious circle that will required great concentration and work on your part to get out of.

Simply put, you focus on the lack, the universe gives you what you are focusing upon, and as certain as the sun follows the moon and vice versa, you receive the same lack you are focusing on. The more you receive, the more you will focus on and hence, the more you will receive. Yikes!

What you need to do is to reverse the situation. Oh, yeah, this is difficult in the beginning, but very doable. And when you get the hang out it, changing your focus from the lack to the abundance becomes a cinch.

So how do you reverse the situation? By catching your thoughts when they come -- a hundred times a day -- and immediately giving them an antidote by means of affirming exactly the opposite, like this:

So, when you think: "I don't have money" you say: "I am in the process of attracting money." Likewise, when you think: "Nobody likes me" you say: "I am in the process of attracting like-minded friends." You think: "I am in pain" you say: "I am becoming free." You think: "I am bored" you say: "Life can be quite exciting." And so on and so forth.

Got it? So don't delay. Start attracting what you want and not what you lack.

Quality Health Insurance - United Healthcare And Blue Cross Blue Shield

Two of the giants in the health care industry are United Healthcare and Blue Cross Blue Shield. For many years, the latter was the number one health insurance provider in the country. Today, however, other companies have surpassed it, although they are still considered to be a first rate carrier of group health insurance.

No Cut-Rates Here!

In addition to group health policies, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) also offers individual based health coverage. You are not looking at HMO insurance or cut rate health insurance when you choose either United Healthcare Insurance or BCBS. Both of these carriers are considered to be tops when it comes to quality health plans.

Most of the time, the person who is enrolled in BCBS or United Healthcare does not make a choice when it comes to getting health care coverage as the insurance is provided to them by their employer. In other cases, a person who seeks out health policies can do so by looking for an agent who will sell them the insurance that they want.

Universal Acceptance with United Healthcare and BCBS

Both group health insurance plans that are being offered by United Healthcare and BCBS are top notch plans and are accepted at most health facilities across the nation as well as in some other countries. Most doctors will accept United Healthcare and BCBS, although they do have their limitations. There are some doctors who will not accept United Healthcare and Blue Cross, although they are few and far between. This is the case with all health care carriers.

Before you get health care insurance, it is always a good idea to make sure that your health care provider accepts the type of policy that you are obtaining so that you can be covered. For the most part, however, both of these prime insurance companies are accepted by most medical care providers.

Weighing the Pros and Cons between United Healthcare and BCBS

When it comes to cost, you may spend a bit less when you get BCBS. The amount that you pay for a premium depends upon the coverage that you get and how many people are in your group. BCBS is still considered to be the top insurance company for those who need to buy individual health packages and who are not covered by group insurance policies as it is reasonable and covers a great deal.

United Healthcare is also a very well known company that is accepted at most of the places where you will see Blue Cross. United Healthcare is a little bit tougher when it comes to pre-existing conditions, although the cost of premiums for those without any pre-existing conditions and who have had a physical in the past 5 years is less than the cost of premiums for those who opt for BCBS.

The choice you make when it comes to health insurance coverage between United Healthcare and BCBS depends on whether you have pre-existing conditions, how much you want to spend for a premium and what type of coverage that you want. Both these companies offer quality coverage that you can purchase on your own or as part of a business group insurance.

Health Benefits Of Basil

Basil is a popular herb in Italian cooking, particularly in pesto. This fragrant and flavorful herb, a relative of peppermint, is an excellent, nutritious addition to your pasta sauce, soup, or salad.

An array of flavonoids exist in basil, which help to protect cells and chromosomes from damage. Studies have shown that two of these flavonoids in particular, orientin and vicenin, are useful in protecting cell structures and chromosomes from damage by radiation and oxygen.

Essential oil of basil has been shown to inhibit the growth of several types of bacteria, many of which have become resistant to antibiotics. This essential oil has been found to inhibit growth of the widespread staphylococcus, enterococcus, pseudomonas, and e. coli bacteria, among others. Adding basil to your vinaigrette will both enhance the flavor, and ensure that the fresh salad greens are safe to eat.

Eugenol, which is found in essential oil of basil, provides an anti-inflammatory effect, by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase. Aspirin and Ibuprofen work by blocking this same enzyme. So, basil can have healing benefits, and provide relief from the symptoms of inflammatory problems, like rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel conditions.

Basil is also a good source of vitamin A, which helps to prevent damage to the cells by free radicals. Vitamin A also prevents free radicals from oxidizing cholesterol in the blood stream, preventing the cholesterol from building up in the blood vessels.

Magnesium is also present in basil. This essential mineral helps the heart and blood vessels to relax, improving blood flow. Other nutrients found in basil include iron, calcium, potassium, and vitamin C.

The fresh, spicy flavor and scent of basil will wake up any boring salad or soup. Use fresh basil whole, or shredded to add a burst of flavor to your dinner. If you are using fresh basil in a cooked dish, add it towards the end of cooking, so that the volatile oils will not be dissipated by the heat.

Insalata Caprese is a simple salad, utilizing tomatoes, fresh mozzerella cheese, basil, and olive oil.

Health And Safety Signs - What Do They Mean?

We see signs almost anywhere we go. When we dine in restaurants, we read the entrance and exit signs. We also see signs pointing us to the emergency exits. Signs also keep things in order. It tells people what part of the street they can cross. It also provides instruction as to where to pass.

Signs are very important in our society today. With everyone minding their own busy schedules, signs prevent it to be chaotic.

There are different types of health and safety signs. Each type serves an important purpose. Here are some of them:

1. Warning Signs

These are very important signs because it informs the individual of the hazard he will encounter ahead. If he is on the road, he can check the warning sign for the kind of hazard he will be encounter ahead.
You will also see warning signs in other establishments. In a fast food chain for example, if the floor is wet, they will place a sign that warns the people of it. This is important so that the customers will not pass by that area to avoid slipping.

2. Prohibition Signs

These signs are essential to instill that a particular act is not permitted. Many use this sign to implement a rule. Some of the popular prohibition signs are no smoking, no trespassing, and no u-turn.
It is important to follow the prohibition sign to ensure the safety of everyone in the area. Making a u-turn in a no u-turn lane might lead to accidents. You might also get in trouble if you smoke in a non-smoking restaurant.

3. Mandatory Signs

You will often see this sign on the road. When you see this, it indicates that you are bound to follow. If there is a mandatory sign for the vehicle in a particular lane to turn right, then it has to turn right.
You will also see this sign in establishments and construction sites. When you see this sign, you have to oblige, if it mandates you to wear safety gear, you have to follow.

4. Danger Sign

This sign indicates the word danger on top of the sign. You will often see this in construction sites. This means that there are inherent dangers if you step in the area. There are also danger signs on the road. This usually serves as a warning when the road is slippery or under construction.

5. Fire Safety Signs

You will see this sign in all establishments as mandated by law. All private and public organization should have these signs posted on their walls. This will direct the people to the nearest exit. This also provides information on what the people should do in case there is a fire.

Health and safety sign play a vital role in our society. First, it provides warning on the possible danger in the area. This informs the people to take precautionary measures as they enter the premises. It also provides instructions on what to do and what not to do. This is essential in maintaining order in the community. Most importantly, it directs you to safety when there is fire.

Disadvantages Of Electronic Health Records System

Electronic health record system is definitely a better way to do store patient's medical health records. It allows for accurate record keeping, increased level of healthcare and a reduction in malpractice insurance premiums. It involves doing away with the pen and paper system of keeping medical records and embracing the digitalizing of all information. Like every new thing, change is not always welcome. A few physicians are stuck in their ways and are not embracing this new system without a fight.

The good news is that you can work around disadvantages to turn them into positive territory or find a replacement. Some of the disadvantages include:-

Privacy Protection
There will always been privacy issues in the healthcare system on who has access to your medical records. With a pen and paper system, with the physical file located at a particular institution there is a limit to who can see your records. Even if there was a security breach and your information is not secured, it is only available to people in that proximity.

But in a situation where your information is sent to a centralized information repository in digital format, all bets are off. This privacy concern is a big issue with many people and will continue to be an issue until it is addressed for good.

Medical records synchronization
Until recently with centralized information repositories, individuals being treated at different facilities could not have their information updated at the same time which could lead to healthcare providers not having updated information when they become available. However, with centralized repositories this problem has been solved, but it has given rise to the above mentioned issue of data security and protection.

High start up cost
There is a high start up cost when transforming a pen and paper system to EHR. Some physicians do not see any immediate benefit to their practice in the short run and drag their feet in implementing EHR.

Legal issues
Taking the healthcare industry to court has in the past few decades been a lucrative venture for attorneys trying to right the wrong done to a patient, whether by omission or commission.

Doctors are already practicing defensive medicine and electronic health record system brings a new potential avenue for litigation and revenue stream for lawyers. With a new system, anything can go wrong, the system could fail or the stored data stolen. Improper uses of collected information are all potential avenues for a law suit.

Gradually, electronic health record system is gaining traction. More and more doctors are embracing it, and depending on the part of the country you are looking at, conversion could be as high as 40%. With government involvement and the amount of resources it is investing, the time will come when digital medical record keeping will be the norm.

Illinois Low Income Government Health Insurance Guide

There are a number of different Illinois low income government health insurance programs that residents of Illinois can take advantage of. Whether you are looking for Illinois low income health insurance for your children, for someone who is disabled, or even if you are looking for an IL low income health insurance plan for yourself or your entire family then there are different options, bother governmental and private, that you should look into.

The state of Illinois is one of the largest states in the United States when speaking about population. Although the state is not very big compared to Texas or California, it houses approximately 12 million people and population has been growing about 3% every 5 years. With this in mind it is important to understand that the need for quality health insurance is a common one in this great state. With the health care costs rising, the state government has been faced with important decisions regarding what to do with families that have no money to afford health care, or families that do have money; but cannon really afford it because they live from paycheck to paycheck. The state of Illinois is one the best states in the nation regarding health insurance for low income families.

The Illinois Department of Health Care and Family Services is a prime place for low income families to find coverage for them or for their children. A program started by the former governor of Illinois, Mr. Rod R. Blagojevich is called Illinois Covered. This program is designed to allow those 1.4 million of uninsured people residing in the state of Illinois to gain health insurance coverage. The program which provides "affordable healthcare for all" was started simply because the governor is tired for waiting for Washington D.C. to come up with answers to the health care crisis that is roaming America in the last decades. The program in whole is divided into different categories depending on eligibility requirements a person needs to have in order to qualify.

One of the programs is called Family Care and its main focus is to provide health care coverage for Illinois people who are below 185% of the poverty line. The governor is trying to get a piece of legislation started in which the eligibility for this plan would go up to families below 400% the poverty line, which would include a larger percentage than those under the program now. What this plan does is offer healthcare coverage to parents living with their children 18 year old or younger and to relatives who are caring for children of those ages. The plan includes doctor visits, dental care, hospital care, emergency services, prescriptions, etc and these services will have small copays of approximately $5. Parents should expect to pay a monthly premium of $15 to $40 depending on the number of family members covered under the plan.

Another program the Illinois government has is called All Kids "Healthcare for kids" and it was started on July 1, 2006. This program is available for children ages 18 and younger, and recently the governor has proposed to cover people up to the age of 21 with this plan. There are a quarter of a million children (approximately 250,000) in the state of Illinois who do not have health insurance coverage. This program is designed to cover kids at an affordable price, and make them eligible to go see a doctor or get surgery when needed. The plan includes services such as doctor visits, hospital stays, prescription drug coverage, vision and dental care, and medical devices such as glasses and asthma inhalers. They rates are affordable and for middle income families the rates will be much lower than those in the private health insurance market.

Health Benefits for Workers with Disabilities coverage is another program in the state of Illinois, and they began providing services for in the year 2002. Families that were once middle class and are now low income families due to the disability of a family member is covered with these health plan as well. After a person is injured, many people fear going back to work because that would mean losing their health insurance coverage and many others just simply cannot afford private health insurance coverage. This program eases the transition from a disability back to work by making sure those people are fully covered with Medicaid. If you are an individual between he ages of 18 and 64 that is disabled and you earn a monthly income of $1,702 per month for individual and $2,282 for a couple you might qualify for this health benefit.

Two other important programs in that the state of Illinois offered that are somewhat linked to each other are Illinois Covered Assist and Illinois Covered Rebate. Illinois Covered Assist is a new program that focuses on primary care and disease management of very low income families, primarily speaking families making less than $10,210 annually for an individual or $13,960 for a family. They will provide access to a medical home through a medical center in the community and prescription drug benefits. On the other hand, Illinois Covered Rebate was designed to help middle income Illinois families to pay for their health insurance premiums. This will pay up to 20% of their premium or up to $1,000 per year.

Although healthcare in the state of Illinois is not perfect and there is still a lot to be done to improve it, the former governor has been doing a great job expanding the benefits so that his programs cover a variety and a high number of people. If you want more information about low income coverage for families in the state, you can contact the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services or a local Illinois health insurance agent or broker.

The Health Risks Associated With The Use Of Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic steroids are classed as illegal drugs and are banned by most legitimate sports organizations. There can be no disputing the fact that testosterone boosts the development of muscle mass and aids sporting performance. Equally there is no doubt that its use can adversely affect the health and wellbeing of users.
The androgenic properties of testosterone can affect the body in many ways but often users see these as inconveniences that can be treated by using other drugs. The most common side effects of testosterone supplementation include the following:
1. Testicle shrinkage - the body responds to testosterone overload by reducing its own production of the hormone. This causes the testicles to shrink due to lack of use. When steroid usage stops, the testicles will grow again but they could take at least six months to return to normal size.
2. Addiction - despite some users trying to convince themselves otherwise, the use of steroids can result in physical and psychological addiction. Withdrawal symptoms can be severe with muscle shrinkage, weakness and loss of libido.
3. Growth of breast tissue - this affects roughly one third of male steroid users. It is caused by the conversion of some excess testosterone into the female hormone estrogen. The breasts usually disappear when use of steroids ceases but in some cases they are permanent and may require surgical removal.
4. Baldness and skin conditions - excess testosterone can be converted into DHT, a hair unfriendly by-product that is responsible for male pattern baldness and oily skin.
5. Pain, bruising, infection and scarring may result from careless or incompetent injecting.
Some people have died as a result of steroid abuse and even those who adopt a careful, pragmatic approach have to accept that these health risks are unavoidable. My advice is, follow the natural route and use nutritional supplements to boost the anabolic process.

Health Benefits Of Ice Skating

Whether you are a professional ice skater, a toddler, a retiree, a student, or a housewife, you can get health benefits from ice skating.

Being in itself an aerobic exercise just like walking, running, and swimming, it offers positive effects for your cardiovascular health. An advantage over running is that it is not as hard on your joints, as it is a low-impact exercise, unless you do jumps while ice skating. It makes heart muscles healthy, providing significant protection from coronary artery diseases and subsequent heart attacks. It also aids in weight loss, as one gets to burn 250 to 810 calories per hour with recreational ice skating, according to the U.S. Figure Skating Association webpage. Meanwhile, competitive skating uses up more calories, at 450 to 1,080 per hour of skating. Just to illustrate, a 68-kg man skating continuously for an hour burns as much calories as when he is running five miles in an hour.

As with other sports activities, ice skating also improves ones endurance. Endurance builds when one maintains a constant, steady pace, over a longer period of time. It is important though that at the start, it is all right to settle for short distances, but over time, these have to be increased gradually so that endurance increases as well.

Ice skating also improves muscle tone. When ice skating, the quadriceps and hamstrings are the leg muscles which do the most work, but many other muscles in the body work in concert with these leg muscles. The abdominal and back muscles also need to contract and relax in order to maintain an upright posture and balance.

Mental fitness is also enhanced with ice skating, as it exercises ones mental control during the act. One needs to be very alert and aware during skating. It is a de-stressor and a form of relaxation for many individuals who use it as a means to break free from the stresses of life and work. The fresh air and sunshine in outdoor ice skating, as well as the company of family and friends, greatly help in unwinding from a long week of work and problems. Self confidence is definitely improved as well. The challenge of establishing full body control and balance brings pride when one is able to overcome these.

It is very nice to see that adults are becoming more aware of their health, and that many have turned to ice skating to become physically fit. Gone are the days when only children were interested in moving and gliding on ice.

Affordable Health Insurance In Michigan

While group health insurance is ideal, there are several ways to obtain affordable health insurance in Michigan if you are unable to obtain it through an employer-sponsored group health insurance plan.

If you have recently become unemployed, you may be eligible for the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985, or COBRA, which allows you to continue your health insurance after becoming unemployed. You may also be eligible for the services offered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA. Other possible affordable health insurance options in Michigan include insurance conversion, Medicaid, Medicare, and state-sponsored health care plans which focus on low-income individuals, children, and families, or those who can not otherwise afford a health insurance policy.

Yet, if none of these options are available to you, you may have to purchase an individual health insurance plan. However, in Michigan, you can set out to purchase an affordable individual health insurance plan without having to worry about being turned down due to pre-existing health conditions you may have. The only stipulation to this is that you must purchase your individual health insurance plan with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

Why is this stipulation worth accepting? Because it is hard for people with pre-existing health conditions to purchase individual health insurance policies. Health insurance companies sometimes refuse to sell individual health insurance policies to the people because the companies feel they are too "high-risk," meaning, they are going to be spending a lot of money on them. This is a sad, but true, occurrence.

Do not let the prices of individual health insurance policies keep you from purchasing one, especially if you have a health condition that requires regular care, treatment, and medication. In Michigan, you can obtain affordable health insurance. Contact the Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Services for more information about purchasing an affordable individual health insurance plan through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

Affective as of September 22, 2010, anyone who has to renew their health insurance policy can look forward to a new option when considering their children's health care plan. With the new health care reform has come the possibility for extension of coverage to adolescents ages 16 and under.

After this date, children are now entitled to remain on the same health insurance policy as their parents.

The new health care reform bill means that children parents can stay under the same health plan as their parent's until they are 26 years old- irrespective of their marital status, student status or home address. It also does not matter if the child (children) is named as a dependent on the mother's or father's tax return.

The only exemption is if a child under 26 is eligible for enrollment into a health plan offered by their employment. The term "child or children", in this case, applies to natural children, stepchildren, adopted children and any other child that is dependent upon an adult during the adoption waiting period. Grandchildren are not eligible. As a result, grandparents who care for their grandchildren full-time are not eligible. Meanwhile, the law for any states that have a maximum dependent age that is above 26 will remain as it was.

1. Anyone wanting to add dependents under the age of 26 years to their health insurance policy is entitled to a one-off special enrollment. Even adult children currently under the age of 26 who have been previously denied such coverage, can apply.

2. Anyone who is currently covered by a single person's health insurance policy or a spouse/employee policy and wants to add their child, can do so. However, they must change their enrollment status to one that allows dependents to be added to the contract, for example as family policy or an employee/child coverage policy.

3. Anyone who is not already enrolled in a health insurance program, but wishes to do so now and take advantage of the new rules regarding dependents under 26, can participate. They must enroll within the special enrollment period and meet all applicable eligibility requirements to qualify.

4. If your children already belong to your health plan, everything remains the same and nothing is subject to change.

5. If you do not require your dependents to remain on your policy until they are 26, you can remove them. In order to do this, you will need to make contact with your health insurance provider and ask for them to be removed.

Health Problems Your Puggle May Face

You want to care for your Puggle, and make sure that she stays healthy and adventurous throughout her life. All dogs may have health problems from time to time. Knowing what specific risks your dog may face can help you keep your pet feeling great.

First, it's important to discuss some of the health problems that Puggles are not as prone to as might be expected. Although one parent is a pug, these dogs do not have as many breathing problems as pugs, because their noses are longer. They also have deeper eye sockets, removing many of the difficulties with the eyes that pugs can exhibit, and they have fewer skin problems.

Given all this, Puggles can be a healthy hybrid, assuming that they are well-bred and treated well from birth. In fact, many hybrid puppies have better health than many pure-bred pups, though that may vary with individual litters.

In order to find a healthy puppy, you need to be very careful in your selection of a puppy.

Many breeders of Puggles are very reputable and responsible breeders, and take care to make sure that the parents of their pups are healthy and have good temperaments and histories. In fact, most breeders care very much about breeding healthy pups. To make sure that your pup will be healthy, you should interview breeders, find out where their breeding stock comes from and check health histories of the parents of your puppy. If possible, visit the breeder before buying a puppy, and know where your puppy is coming from.

Whenever possible, avoid buying puppies from a pet store or anyone else other than a reputable breeder. If you do buy a puppy from a pet store, be very careful about her health. Have a complete health checkup conducted by a vet as soon as you take her home, and watch careful for any infections or signs of harsh treatment as a puppy.

Once you have your puppy safely at home and you've gotten her puppy shots and has a clean bill of health, you will need to keep her healthy and work with her vet to keep her healthy.

Puppy shots are crucial, of course. This is the most important thing you can do to protect your pup's health from the beginning. Once your pup has had shots, you need to continue with the shots on an annual basis, of course. Heart worm medication should be administered on a monthly basis, and can be prescribed by your vet. You'll also want to make sure you have flea protection for your Puggle, particularly if you allow her outside.

Keeping your Puggle healthy is primarily a matter of preventing injury and poisoning. Once your dog starts out healthy, she is likely to stay healthy if she can. Baby-proofing, or Puggle-proofing, your home, is essential to keeping your pet healthy. Like the proverbial toddler, your new baby is very inquisitive and can get into trouble quite easily.

Fortunately, keeping your home safe for your pet is mostly a matter of making sure there is nothing on the floor that can be choked on or that can poison your puppy if swallowed, making sure that your Puggle can't climb on anything and fall off, and keeping spills of hazardous materials, including detergent, cleaned up.

When it comes to keeping your Puggle healthy and communicating with your vet, there are no stupid questions. If you suspect your dog may need medical attention, call your vet. This, along with regular checkups, will help insure your pet's safety.

The Health Risks Of Running

Running is without doubt one of the most strenuous forms of exercise and can take a heavy toll on your body unless your are aware of some of the risks and take preventative action. This article explores some of the health risks associated with running and suggests some practical steps to help prevent serious injury.

1. Shin splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)

These are a very common health risk for runners. It sends shooting pains up your shins and occurs most frequently in those who have recently taking up running. Essentially it is a slight weakness in the muscles that attach your foot to the lower part of your leg.

Preventative action:

- Stretch well before and after running to strengthen the muscles in that area. Over time you should notice the problem disappear as you build up muscle tone.

- If it is painful after running apply ice to your shins and make sure you rest well.

- Try running on softer surfaces like grass rather than concrete until you build some muscle tone, as grass is more cushioned to run on.

2. Joint problems

When you run you have the potential to place the equivalent load of a baby elephant on your joints. These joints are compressed with every step you take and overuse can cause them to become inflamed, painful and sore. This can lead to serious long term joint disorders unless you look after them.

Preventative measures: It is impossible to stop all of the compression experienced by joints when running but you can reduce it significantly by taking some of the following simple measures:

- Buying the right running shoes will absorb some of the strain on your joints by acting as a shock absorber cushioning some of the impact your feet experiences as it hits the ground. Be willing to spend plenty on a top of the range pair of shoes as it will make a difference.

- At the end of a period of running your muscles will have shortened and can sometimes be on the verge of spasm. Take time to stretch for 20-30 minutes as this will help the muscles and tendons to return to their full length and also ease joint pain as compressed joints are stretched out.

3. Lower back problems.

The lower back has to deal with significant pressure both from the surface you are running on and also from the effort of keeping you moving whilst you run. Fell runners and Cross country specialists can suffer significant lower back problems due to the undulating nature of the terrain and constant readjustments being made by the back to compensate, but this is also true of road runners.

Preventative measure:

- Stretch well before AND after a race. Stretching will lengthen the spine and separate the vertebrate, releasing some of the compression caused during running.

- Personally I find Yoga a brilliant form of exercise for lower back problems. Pilates is also good as both forms work on lengthening and strengthening the spine and improving the range of movement available in your lower back. I have found that since taking up Yoga my back and joints have hurt much less after running.

4. Heart Attack

It is certainly true that your risk of suffering a heart attack increases with running for some individuals.
This is because running places huge demands on your cardio vascular system, which requires increased levels of oxygen to keep muscles supplied to enable you to keep running. If you have clogged or restricted arteries, caused by high fat diets, your body can't keep up the oxygen supply to the heart, causing the heart to stop pumping, leading to a heart attack.

Even healthy individuals can suffer from a heart attack whilst running because of a previously unknown heart condition.

Preventative measures:

- Before you take up running, not matter how well you feel, ensure you have a medical to ensure that you haven't got any underlying heart problems.

- Eating a low fat diet will reduce furring of the arteries, caused by fat clinging to them that ultimately leads to them becoming restricted.

- Gradually build up your running miles over time to prevent a sudden strain on your cardio vascular system especially if your body is not used to it. Build up in multiples of 2 miles.

7. Muscle tears

Runners are more prone to muscle tears because of the frequency and nature of the stresses that they place on their muscles. Lactic acid, which is caused by a failure of your body to get sufficient oxygen to your muscles, builds up and attacks muscles. Muscles that haven't been warmed up or down properly may be more susceptible to tears as the lactic acid attacks them.

Preventative measure: Ensure you stretch before and after running to give your muscles maximum flexibility and reduce risk of tears. Shortened muscles are always more prone to tearing or getting pulled.

8. Dehydration

As a runner you need to ensure that your body is well hydrated as dehydration increases muscle fatigue and exhaustion. Most people should drink 2.5 litres of water a day, but if you are running you should consider as much as 5 litres, to replace lost nutrients during a race or long distance run.

Summary

This article has examined some of the health risks faced by runners. It has to be remembered however that there are many more health benefits of running and whilst reading through this article, you may feel daunted by the number of issues raised. As long as you take some of the preventative measures detailed, you should have few worries after all there is always a risk to doing anything!
